Frequently asked questions

Is there a beer tally app for a student house?

Yes. KantineTab is a free drinks tab for a student house or any shared fridge. It replaces the tally sheet on the fridge door. Everyone taps what they take on their own phone: two taps and it's on their name. It's part of the FestiDrinkz app and also works in a browser.

How do you split drinks with housemates?

Everyone has their own running balance. What you buy gets added and what you take gets subtracted, at the house price. If you owe money, you buy the next crate or pay someone who's in credit. You settle up whenever you like, so nobody has to collect money every month.

Who pays for the crate?

Anyone can buy stock. Enter what the crate cost and that amount goes on your own balance. There's no shared cash box and no fixed rota for buying.

What if a crate was on offer, or cost more than usual?

Whoever buys stock always gets the full amount on their own balance. A beer always costs the house price, whatever the crate cost. When the fridge is more or less empty, the treasurer settles it: the difference between what was bought and what was taken is split according to what each person took. That way the house together pays exactly what the stock cost.

What does the treasurer do?

The treasurer keeps the price list up to date and settles the fridge. That's all: everyone buys stock and pays for themselves. If the treasurer moves out, they hand the role to another housemate first.

What happens when someone moves out?

They choose Moving out in the app, or the treasurer does it for them. Everything they took and bought stays in the history. If they're in credit, they ask their housemates for the money or gift it to the house. If they owe, that stays visible until it's paid. If it never gets paid, the treasurer can write it off and it's split between the housemates.

Does everyone have to install the app?

No. Put the house link in your group chat. Everyone can take drinks and check their balance in the app or in a browser. You don't need an account.

What if the price of a crate goes up?

The treasurer changes the price, and the new price applies from that moment. What has already been taken keeps the old price. Only the treasurer can change the price list.

What about a new housemate?

Send them the house link. A new housemate starts at zero and only pays for what they take from then on. The history of earlier housemates stays where it is.

Can someone put drinks on someone else's name?

Everyone chooses who they are on their own phone. If someone picks a name already chosen on another phone, the app first asks if that's right, and in the app the other person gets a notification. The treasurer's name can't be chosen on another device. Everything taken is in the list with the name next to it, so you can always see what's on your name. A new treasurer only takes over once the current treasurer confirms it. If they don't respond within 2 days, other housemates can confirm it instead.

Does it work if I don't have a Dutch bank account?

Yes. KantineTab only keeps track of who owes what. It doesn't handle money, so you pay each other yourselves, for example by bank transfer, and report it in the app. The recipient confirms it has arrived. The shortcuts for payment requests are aimed at the Netherlands: they open Tikkie, a Dutch payment request app, or a banking app such as ING, Rabobank, bunq or Revolut. Amounts in a house are always in euros.

Does it work with both Dutch and international housemates?

Yes. The site and app are in English and Dutch, and each phone uses its own language. One housemate can read it in English and another in Dutch, with the same balances. Notifications arrive in the language of that phone. Names of housemates and drinks stay as you typed them.

What does it cost?

Nothing, whatever the size of your house. No account, no subscription and no ads. KantineTab is part of the free FestiDrinkz app and also works in a browser.

Is your house already on here?
You don't need to create anything. Ask a housemate for the share link, then you're in straight away and can see what's on your name.
